March 2009

I've always had a problem with black-and-white cookies: I admire their iconic design, but as a fervent chocolatist, I have no interest in eating anything covered with vanilla frosting. So I was gobsmacked to find, at Orlando's in Manhasset, cookies that were black and white, but others that were also all black and all white. What enterprising baker, I wondered, had cut the Gordian cookie knot? Joe Spagna, owner of Orlando's, told me it was Bohemia-based Jonathan Lord, a wholesaler specializing in cheesecake. To make matters better, the cookies taste great.

The cookies are available for under $2 at Orlando's Deli (369 Plandome Rd., Manhasset, 516-627-1079), Robinson's Tea Room (97 Main St., Stony Brook, 631-751-1232), Kookaburra Coffee Co., 69 N. Village Ave., Rockville Centre, 516-255-1750), International Delicatessen (483 Bellmore Ave., East Meadow, 516-481-5535), Gemelli's (115 E. Main St., Babylon, 631-321-4515), and many other Long Island outlets.
